Ludzie i Nie, czyli Grandes Personnes z Afryki
Gdy oglądam teatr lalek, niezmiennie pytam samą siebie, czy to człowiek ukrywa się za lalką. A może jest odwrotnie?
Tak jak z rytem maski w Afryce. Gdy tancerz zakłada maskę, staje się kimś innym, niż był. Nie człowiekiem. Przekracza granice sacrum i profanum. Les Grandes Personnes to kolektyw gigantycznych lalek, który działa w Boromo w Burkina Faso i w Aubervilliers pod Paryżem.
Gigantyczne marionety nie są tradycją afrykańską, a europejską. Procesje z ich udziałem wywodzą się z XIV-wiecznej Europy, a dziś stanowią żywe dziedzictwo kulturowe Belgii i Francji na liście UNESCO.
Ale w 1998 roku francuski lalkarz Christophe Evette z Aubervilliers, gdzie działa francuska grupa specjalizująca się w gigantycznych lalkach, prowadził warsztaty teatralne w Boromo w Burkina Faso. I tam, za sprawą wielkiej przyjaźni z rzeźbiarzem tradycyjnym Bomavé Konaté, narodził się pomysł ulicznych parad gigantycznych lalek w Burkina Faso. Wielkie marionety błyskawicznie zostały zaanektowane przez lokalny duchowy i społeczny teatr tradycyjny, w którym najważniejszą rolę gra kult maski kilku ludów: Bwa, Nuna, Ko czy Mossi.
Olbrzymie kukły realizowane są ekologicznie, czyli z naturalnych materiałów odzyskanych, a zespół aktorów Les Grandes Personnes to lalkarze, rzeźbiarze, tancerze, muzycy, studenci, gospodynie domowe, rolnicy.
Ta współczesna dla Afrykanów tradycja teatralna rozwija się dynamicznie. Często mistrz wielkich lalek wyrusza w podróż artystyczną i tworzy nową grupę. Na kontynencie działa już ponad 30 takich kolektywów.
Zafascynowana lalkarzami i ich lalkami w Boromo któregoś dnia podążyłam śladem Les Grandes Personnes do Gwinei na biennale teatralne Festard w Dubréka w Gwinei, które założył i prowadzi dziennikarz i reżyser Hassane Hilal Sylla. Dla potrzeb festiwalu mistrz Clod Mo, czyli Claude Maurice Baille z Les Grandes Personnes z Aubervilliers, przygotował z lokalnymi aktorami nowy uliczny spektakl.
Magda Podsiadły. Wrocławianka. Córka artystów – malarki i ceramiczki Krystyny Michałowskiej Podsiadły i rzeźbiarza Leona Podsiadłego, dziennikarka wrocławskiej Gazety Wyborczej przez prawie trzy dekady, dziś freelance. Dzieciństwo spędziła w Gwinei i nadal często wędruje do Afryki Zachodniej. Absolwentka polonistyki na Uniwersytecie Wrocławskim. Poza działalnością dziennikarską zajmuje się fotografią reportażową. Ma na koncie ponad dwadzieścia wystaw indywidualnych i zbiorowych. Większość poświęcona jest sztuce, kulturze, tradycji i życiu codziennemu w Afryce Zachodniej.

Humans and Not, or Grandes Personnes from Africa
When I watch puppet theater, I invariably ask myself whether it is a human being hiding behind the puppet. Or perhaps it is the other way around?
Just like with mask rite in Africa. When a dancer puts on a mask, he becomes somebody else than he was. Not a human being. He crosses the boundaries between the sacred and the profane.
Les Grandes Personnes is a collective of giant puppets active and based in Boromo, Burkina Faso, and Aubervilliers, near Paris.
Giant puppets are not an African tradition, but a European one. Processions with their participation originated in 14th-century Europe, and today they constitute a part of the living cultural heritage of Belgium as well as France on the UNESCO list.
But in 1998, a French puppeteer Christophe Evette from Aubervilliers, where a French group specializing in giant puppets operates, conducted theater workshops in Boromo, Burkina Faso. And there, thanks to a great friendship with traditional sculptor Bomavé Konaté, the idea of street parades of giant puppets in Burkina Faso was born. The large marionettes were quickly adopted by the local spiritual and social traditional theater, in which the most important role is played by the mask cult of several peoples: Bwa, Nuna, Ko, and Mossi.
The giant puppets are made in an eco-friendly way, i.e. from natural recycled materials, and the Les Grandes Personnes troupe consists of puppeteers, sculptors, dancers, musicians, students, housewives, and farmers.
This theatrical tradition contemporary for Africans is developing dynamically. Often, the master of large puppets embarks on an artistic journey and creates a new group. There are already over 30 such collectives operating on the continent.
Fascinated by puppeteers and their puppets in Boromo, one day I followed in the footsteps of Les Grandes Personnes to Guinea for the Festard theater biennial in Dubréka, Guinea, founded and run by a journalist and director Hassane Hilal Sylla. Especially for the festival, master Clod Mo, aka Claude Maurice Baille from Les Grandes Personnes in Aubervilliers, prepared a new street performance with local actors.
Magda Podsiadły. A native of Wrocław. A daughter of artists – painter and ceramist Krystyna Michałowska Podsiadły and sculptor Leon Podsiadły – worked as a journalist for Wrocław branch of Gazeta Wyborcza for almost three decades, now a freelancer. She spent her childhood in Guinea and still often travels to West Africa. A graduate of Polish Studies at the University of Wrocław. Apart from her journalistic activities, she is also involved in reportage photography. She has had over twenty individual and collective exhibitions. Most of them are devoted to art, culture, tradition, and everyday life in West Africa.
